VALORANT Champions Shanghai has delivered a brutal start for the host nation, with all four Chinese organisations losing their opening series 0-2 and failing to take a single map between them. The 0-8 aggregate result leaves TYLOO, EDward Gaming, XLG Esports and JD Gaming in immediate danger of being among the first teams eliminated from the tournament, though no side has yet been confirmed out. Full details on the event’s structure and participating sides are covered in Esports Insider’s Champions Shanghai preview.

A Clean Sweep The Wrong Way

TYLOO opened the round against G2 Esports and fell 0-2, closing out a 9-26 round differential. EDward Gaming, tipped by many as China’s strongest hope heading into the event, lost 0-2 to LOUD with a 13-26 differential – the closest any Chinese side came to stealing a round advantage.

XLG Esports, making its first appearance on the Champions stage, was beaten 0-2 by Karmine Corp and matched TYLOO’s 9-26 differential. JD Gaming rounded out the day with a 0-2 loss to FUT Esports, managing an 11-26 scoreline that made it the only Chinese team to reach double figures in total rounds won.

Home Turf, Away Form

The results land especially hard given the event’s setting in Shanghai, where fans travelled specifically to back the domestic contingent. A winless opening for the hosts makes for a disappointing spectacle, and it raises the prospect that Chinese organisations could be the first to depart the tournament once elimination matches begin.

That would carry consequences beyond the scoreboard – early exits for home teams tend to dampen crowd energy at host events, a dynamic organisers and broadcasters will be watching closely as the group stage progresses. The contrast with VCT Americas could not be sharper: 100 Thieves, LOUD, NRG and G2 Esports have combined for a perfect 4-0 record in the same round, underlining just how far apart the two regions currently look. For a broader read on which rosters entered Shanghai as favourites, Esports Insider’s breakdown of VALORANT’s strongest teams before Champions Shanghai offers useful context.

What Comes Next?

Attention now turns to the second round of group matches, where each Chinese team will look to salvage its campaign. None of Wednesday’s results are final in terms of elimination, but another winless round would sharply narrow the path forward for VCT China’s four representatives at their own home tournament.
