Esports tournament organiser ESL has announced a significant update to its IEM Cologne Major 2026 format.
For the first Counter-Strike Major of 2026, the third stage of the tournament will use best-of-three series for the first time in the history of Valve’s first-person shooter title.
ESL revealed that the change aims to add a greater competitive element to Stage 3, moving away from best-of-one matches used in previous Counter-Strike Majors. As a result of the format change, the Stage 3 dates for the IEM Cologne Major will now take place across five days.
In addition to an extra day of action, ESL has also released more tickets across the entirety of Stage 3, enabling more fans to see the world’s best Counter-Strike teams in action. Tickets for matches taking place on June 11th will go on sale on February 26th.
While Stage 3 will use a best-of-three to decide which teams advance to the playoffs, the first two stages will continue using a best-of-one format.
The expansion of Stage 3 marks another change to Counter-Strike’s Major format. In November 2025, tournament organiser StarLadder introduced a best-of-five Grand Final, moving away from a best-of-three to determine the event’s winner.
With an additional day of Stage 3 confirmed, the IEM Cologne Major schedule is as follows:
- Stage 1 – June 2nd to 5th
- Stage 2 – June 6th to 9th
- Stage 3 – June 11th to 15th
- Playoffs – June 18th to 21st
Best-Of-Three Becoming The Standard
Over the last 12 months, best-of-three group stages have become the norm in several Tier 1 tournaments taking place across the globe. PGL Cluj-Napoca 2026 saw 16 teams compete in a best-of-three group stage to decide the eight teams advancing to the playoffs.
ESL is no stranger to using three maps across its Pro Tour circuit. ESL Pro League Season 23 will feature best-of-threes across the two online stages and the majority of its playoffs.
The addition of an expanded Stage 3 format has the potential to raise the stakes and remove the often unpredictable nature of a best-of-one. As a result, the world’s top Counter-Strike teams will have to prove themselves across more maps secure a playoff place.
